Earlier this month Melbourne experienced a rare and particularly annoying event; the public transport network stopped dead. Trains and trams stood still, leaving Melbourne commuters with no choice but to wait it out, and be late for work.
We’re not experts in the public transport system, but we’ll assume it’s not possible to prevent all kinds of delays and cancellations. However, it is possible to keep commuters in the loop, instead of keeping them stuck on the city loop.
Over in India, transport takers can now be conveniently notified via text message in advance of any cancellations that may impact them.
Passengers simply enter their mobile number into their reservation slips while buying tickets from Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters or when purchasing online tickets. This way, they are in the database to receive the alerts.
According to recent reports, the service is currently only offered to passengers who board at originating stations, but it will be extended out to cover all stations at a later stage.
I’m sure we’re not alone in thinking this might be a great idea for us in Australia, to help prevent delays and allow people to arrange alternative transport, if that’s an option.
