Unicode now available on our API!

Topic: Esendex, Technical

Unicode is now available as a character set on our API, offering exciting new prospects for messaging services using our SMS API. We’ve incorporated Unicode into our SMS platform to provide the most user-friendly services and to promote multiculturalism.

Traditionally, an SMS contains up to 160 characters from the GSM alphabet, Latin characters and digits. Basically, everything you would need to converse in English, French, Spanish and other similar languages. This does not include characters necessary for dialogue in languages such as Mandarin, Arabic, Greek and Thai. Although some of these other languages are preferred by enormous portions of the global population.

The inclusion of Unicode for SMS enables any characters to be included in SMS, thereby opening the possibility for communication in even more languages. This is an imperative feature in an increasingly globalised market, whereby international communication is constant and essential. Corporations, and their audiences, are multinational regardless of size due to the expanding technological environment in which modern businesses operate.

We’re not just talking about penetrating the international market for your products; we’re talking about local communication. Australia is one of the most multicultural countries in the world, and we have the language diversity that comes with it. This diversity of language can lead to communication barriers such as mistranslations. Unicode combats this problem by introducing more characters as an option for SMS.

Introducing Unicode through the Esendex API is just the beginning. We’ll be rolling this out to other services shortly to accommodate to more of our customers’ needs.
